On Wednesday, February 19, Afternoon Arts students held their exhibition and performance in the CFTA.
The event began with an original string composition by Mofe Akinyanmi ’21. The piece was entitled “The Jolly Rancher.” The audience was immensely impressed, both by the composition and by the group of students who performed it. As the piece concluded, visual artist Nam Dao ’22 explained the first two of his objective paintings, one of which was inspired by Hill’s architectural style. Dao also created a painting of a raining image. In his process, he had determined oil paints to be superior to acrylic paints, and used this knowledge to create the effect of rain. The final two paintings were abstract – one of an ocean, and another of a sea captain. The sea captain in particular was interesting since one had to look at it very closely to see the figure in it.
The recital continued with Juliana Ma ’20 up next performing a piece that Motzart wrote at age 19.
At last, Barry Wang ’20 made his way to the piano, announced he would be playing a piece by a Chinese composer, and dedicated it to his grandfather who loved the song. This one was louder, stronger, and bolder than any of the previous pieces, and the audience was so captivated by it, that it was shocking when the piece, and the entire event, was over. Wang later said he “appreciated the opportunities offered at Hill [through Afternoon Arts] to both visual and performing artists.”
