Izzy Lux ’18 is an artist of all trades. Her main focus at Hill is ceramics, but Lux is also interested in fiber arts and photography, and even dabbles in painting and drawing.
Lux arrived at Hill in the fall of 2016 as a new 5th former. Her passion for ceramics had started only a year prior to her arrival at Hill. As a high school sophomore in Los Angeles, Lux decided to fulfill her school’s arts requirement by taking a ceramics class.
Lux said it ended up being the best decision she made.
Lux believes she found her passion in ceramics because it was different from her family’s artistic interests. With her father being a storyboard artist, Lux wanted to distinguish herself from her family and find her own passion in another medium of art.
“Once I found ceramics, I knew I had found my own niche so I just kept at it,” Lux said.
During the spring of 2017, Lux was involved in the Afternoon Arts program where she continued to develop her skills in all mediums. This year Lux produced her personal favorite artwork, titled “Tranquilo.”
“Tranquilo” is a photography based piece with an added layer of paint and wood paneling. All of the photos were taken in California and represent the beauty of nature.
Ellen Nelson, senior master of the arts, believes “Tranquilo” proves Lux’s ability to create artwork across different mediums.
“Izzy continues to amaze me with her creative insight and manual dexterity while working with a broad range of materials,” Nelson said. “Whether the material is glass, clay, or glaze, Izzy’s technique is skilled and focused.”
Lux is currently in Nelson’s AP Studio Art class and is working on a project with the theme of women’s rights and fear.
As for the future, Lux is considering double majoring or minoring in art in college.
