Laolu Senbanjo is a Nigerian born artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Senbanjo is a visual artist, musician, human rights lawyer, and activist. He connects his Yoruba heritage to his art with his trademark: the Sacred art of the Ori. As one of the leaders in Afrofuturism art, Senbanjo links his culture with the modern world. He consistently uses the black human form and weaves written messages into his work. Senbanjo refers to his style as “Afromysterics” which means the mystery of the African thought pattern. His preferred medium is charcoal because it is as natural as life and death. He also dabbles in acrylics, inks and wood.
Senbanjo has worked with Beyonce on “Lemonade,” Nike, Alicia Keys, Usher, and many other artists and labels. He recently partnered with Bvlgari for his own cologne called “Man in Black essence.” Each bottle comes complete with some of his artwork on the label. Senbanjo also recently gave a Ted Talk, this past August, about his sacred art of the Ori, enlightening others about his art inspiration and culture. He continues to inspire others and show how his African heritage can coincide with his American life.
