On Friday October 20, the annual Fall Concert will take place in the Center for the Arts. The Chamber Choir, Chorus, Hilltones, Hilltrebles, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble will all be performing.
The new leaders of each musical group were chosen last Spring. Seonhwa Hwang ’18 will lead the orchestra as both Concertmaster and Orchestra President. Larry Lo ’18 and Tommy Krumrine ’18 will share the responsibilities as Co-Presidents of the Jazz Ensemble. Nicole Sergiwa ’18 and Lexi Chroscinski ‘19 will lead the all-female acapella group Hilltrebles and Reed Bauer ’18 and Max Pollak ’19 will lead the male equivalent Hilltones.
During this concert, students can expect to hear an array of music. The instrumental part will start the show with the Orchestra followed by the Jazz Ensemble. The orchestra will be playing “Simple Gifts” and fiddle song “Ashokan Farewell.” The Jazz Ensemble will be playing “Simply Swing It, Magic Hour,” and “Chameleon.”
“I’m excited for the concert,” Hwang said. “We have a really wide variety of genres ranging from fiddle to classical, and it’s a great opportunity to showcase the new talent this year. Look forward to a specific piece we’ll play. You’ll all recognise it as a variation on a chapel hymn!”
Following the instrumental performances and intermission, the vocal section will take place. Chamber Choir will be performing “The Wisdom of the Moon.” The Chorus will be performing songs such as The Ground, which will be accompanied by a string quartet and pianist. The Chorus will also feature an all-female folk song called “Will the Circle be Unbroken?” To end the concert, both Hilltrebles and Hilltones will continue their trend of playing well-known pop songs while performing one song each as well as a combined piece. Hilltrebles will perform “Dog Days are Over” while Hilltones will perform “Haven’t Met You Yet.” The combined piece will be “Take on Me.”
“Trebles has been practicing extremely hard these past few weeks and I am excited to showcase the fruits of our labor in a few days,” Sergiwa said.
Though this concert occurs every year, Director of Instrumental Music and Senior Master of the Arts Margaret Neiswender believes every year has something special to deliver.
“Just like an athletic team, each year the Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble welcome new players and depend on the returning players to guide and lead other musicians,” Neiswender said. “The Fall Concert provides a showcase for the 2017-2018 musical season as the concert features all of The Hill School musical ensembles.”
Yoon Soo Lim, Oaklawn-Tuttle Director of Vocal Music and Athey Family Master of the Arts, has similar opinions on this matter. Lim is concerned with how her new singers are adapting to their new roles, especially considering the short time-frame for rehearsal.
“I have to choose songs that my students can handle,” said Lim in terms of the song selection for this concert.
Overall, both teachers are very excited for this concert and fully expect a great concert.
Neiswender especially has high hopes for the Fall Concert.
When asked what two words she would use to describe the upcoming concert, Neiswender said “Great Expectations.”
