On Friday, October 18, Hill will host its annual fall Parents’ Weekend concert. The concert will include the orchestra, jazz ensemble, and numerous vocal groups.
The jazz ensemble will be playing three selections: “Smooth” by Santana, “Prayer Meeting” and “September” by Earth Wind and Fire.
“My favorite song is a ballad called Prayer Meeting,” said Henry Chen ’21, lead trumpet player. “This song proved to be quite a challenge for many musicians. They had to learn how to control their sound and play with a softer tone as opposed to the louder sound they are used to.”
“The band has a lot more experience playing together now than ever so the sound is refined to a greater degree than ever before,” said trumpet player Michael Soland ’21.
The orchestra will also be playing three selections: “Espana cañi,” “Flying,” and “In a Gentle Rain.” Leo Shi ’21, a second year flutist in the orchestra, believes the group’s performance this year will truly catch the audience’s attention.
“My favorite piece is ‘In a Gentle Rain,’” Shi said. “The piece features many sixth form soloists and will be a captivating part of the performance for the audience.”
As a member of the chorus and the Hill Tones, Shi will also be singing six songs with the chorus: “We Are,” “Jenny,” “Prayer,” “The Long Path,” “How Lovely Are The Messengers,” and “Ain’t Misbehavin.” He’ll perform three additional selections with the Hill Tones: “Pure Imagination,” “Hold My Hand,” and “Never Ending Story.” “People should come to the concert because the newly-formed chamber choir will be performing, so students will get to hear a group they didn’t hear last year,” Shi said.
With a total of 15 selections from six different musical groups, the fall concert is sure to have something for everyone. A highlight of Parents’ Weekend, the CFTA will be the place to be on Friday night.
