On April 14 in the student center, student band “28:24” will be holding their first concert titled “Half Past Late.” Echo Wu ’20, Sarah Qiu ’20, Eva Wu ’20, and Logan Punzone ’20 started the band during their 3rd form year. The now 4th formers wanted a band that was organized and run by students. With faculty advisor Margaret Neiswender, these four students and many others were able to make this dream a reality.
Eva Wu ’20 felt passionate to start the band because there were many students who were passionate about music but couldn’t take Jazz Ensemble or Orchestra because of schedule conflicts and other reasons. She and her friends had the initial idea to give student musicians on campus another opportunity to work with a group of their peers.
The band mainly performs pop songs that Hill students are familiar with. However, they have been tapping into each band members’ individual musical skills with solos and vocal harmonies. Wu’s favorite song to perform is Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still.” The band’s rendition of the song includes the traditional Chinese instrument pipa, played by Joyce Pu ‘19, which brings a unique sound to the music.
Sine Polcharoen ‘19 says her favorite thing about being lead vocalist is being able to “step back and appreciate all the talent in the group.” One of her favorite songs to perform is Japanese Denim by Daniel Caesar, one of her favorite artists. Polcharoen says students can expect R&B and rock music alongside pop.
“[It’s] always exciting and fun to collaborate with the other musicians and get creative,” Pu said.
28:24 puts a twist on all their songs, making it unique to their talents and strengths.
“Anything involving music in general is great, but when it is also combined with the opportunity to vibe with students that I may not see around school or get the opportunity to interact with, that makes it so much better,” Wes Midy ‘18 said. “To vibe in the practice room and eventually become one with the crowd we are playing for, that is exhilarating. There’s honestly nothing like it.”
28:24 invites everyone to hear their music and witness the musical talents within the student body.
