The 3rd form Student Government Association debate was held on October 19th in the Widener Arts and Crafts building. There were nine candidates running for the two spots as form representatives: one male representative, and one female representative.
The candidates were: Steven Chen, Grish Vazirani, Elizabeth Hudak, William Thompson, Michael Wong, Samir Khan, Jamie Olson, Elizabeth McAlpin and Rohan Dondeti.
Each of the candidates were required to write an essay on how they would represent the form as a member of the SGA. The essays were posted on the wall of the Student Life Office in the student center.
The format of the multi-question debate continues from last year, rather than the previous format of each candidate giving a two-minute speech in front of the form.
The questions ranged from topics questioning the candidates’ knowledge of the function of the SGA and what each candidate will bring to the SGA. Questions ranged from, “What do you see your role on the SGA as being?” As well as, “Raise your hand if you have read the SGA constitution.”
SGA President Drew Sottosanti ’18 has a positive outlook on the new representatives.
“This year there was a very strong field of candidates that truly cared about the school and exemplified Hill values,” Sottosanti said.
The winners of the election were James Olson ’21 and Elizabeth McAlpin ’21. They were ranked the highest out of all possible candidates.
Before the debate, Olson planned on being a level headed and confident representative for the 3rd form.
“I want somebody to represent our form who is going to take the role seriously and responsibly, and that is something I plan on doing if elected,” Olson said.
The two new representatives joined the existing members of the SGA in the SGA open forum on Monday, October 16th in the Ryan Library.
The Forum’s purpose is to discuss the proposals that the SGA is currently working on as well as serve as a platform for students to pitch ideas that the SGA can take into consideration for their next proposal.
