Hill vocal groups put on a spectacular winter concert

Despite many challenges that the four Hill vocal groups – Hilltones, Hilltrebles, Chamber Choir, and Chorus – faced, they were able to put on their first in-person vocal performance in several years.

Yoon Soo Lim, the Hill School Director of Vocal Music, spoke a bit about how the vocal concert was a huge success, with many students and faculty members coming to the Chapel for the first Hill school vocal performance in recent years.

“There are so many things going on right now, and for people to choose to come to our concert means a lot…we just wanted a night to really enjoy music together,” Lim said.

The four vocal groups sang in the chapel on the night of Feb. 18. This included the Hilltones. They haven’t had enough members to do a song together in the past few years, but this year they were able to perform “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel.

Johnny Dai ’22, a member of Hilltones, described how practices were for him, as it was his first year singing in his senior year.

“Coming to practices outside of class was truly an experience for me, because I didn’t think taking time out of class or other things I could be doing would be so enjoyable,” Dai said. “It was a really nice experience working with other people, especially on something so emotional.”

The emotional songs moved the audience, but that was not all that was in these singers’ repertoire. There were also more upbeat songs, which Meena Ali ’23 enjoyed. “I really grooved along to every single one of them.”

A lot of hard work was put into making the concert. One of the singers, Ryan Owens ’25, reflected on this.

“[It was] definitely a lot of hard work to prepare for this show. I’m really proud of how it turned out,” Owens said.
