Jake Craig ’22 has been a standout wrestler since he joined the community last year. He currently has a record of 17-3.
What drives you to wrestle?
My drive to wrestle comes from the competitive spirit that I’ve had as long as I can remember. It also helps that my family supports me in everything that I do in the sport.
What are your hopes for this season?
My goal this season is to reach the top; just like it was last season. I came up short at prep nationals last year, however, the past is in the past. I am looking forward to what the future holds in this season.
Who has been the biggest influence in your career?
Probably my brother Cody, he always has been there for me inside and outside of wrestling. He always was beating me up in practices, making me better, and I attribute a lot of my wrestling skills to him.
Who are you outside wrestling?
Outside of wrestling, I would like to think that I am a pretty energetic person, but I can be an introvert. I have a small friend group at Hill and in Maine that I socialize with a lot. Contrary to what people believe about me because of wrestling, I am not athletic at all. I usually dislike working out, even if it’s good for me. I would rather sit in my room and surf the web on my computer all day.
What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career?
I honestly do not know. Last year I won Pennsylvania Prep states which was cool, but if I am being honest, I don’t feel like I have accomplished enough yet to say that I have a major accomplishment.
What is your biggest challenge as a wrestler?
As a wrestler, it is definitely the weight. Every wrestler has their own issue – mine is weight-cutting. I have a very hard time keeping it down and making weight. It’s very tiring, but I’ve been trying my best to work on it.
What does your future in the sport look like?
I don’t know what the future holds for me in wrestling. Right now, I would love to go to college for wrestling. But I don’t know what God has in store for me; so for now, I’ll leave it up to Him.
What are your hopes for the Hill wrestling team this year?
I really love the team that I am on. We’ve all got each other’s backs 100% of the time. My goal, while I am here at Hill, for the team is to make bonds that last way beyond the sport. Wrestling isn’t always about the growth of the wrestler, but rather the growth of the person.
