Ontario, Canada, the 2019 Canadian junior open, the stage is set. This year the Hill School Squash Team’s Juan Ber Hinostroza ’21, Andres Arevalo ’22 and Jason Kim ’21 travelled to The Club at White Oaks to participate in a prestigious annual tournament held for the world’s top squash players. From December 6th to December 10th Kim, Arevalo and Hinostroza competed in a tournament with over 320 other players. This was the largest tournament in event history. With some of the world’s top junior players, many of whom are national champions in their home countries, playing at the tournament. Kim, Arevalo, and Hinostroza sought to compete at a high level but also be able to improve themselves by watching and analyzing the top players at the tournament.
Along with Head Coach of the Varsity Squash, Chanel Erasmus, Kim, Arevalo, and Hinostroza had the chance to meet and socialize with others with the same passion for squash. With diversity in the draws, the high level of play and the amazing organization, this tournament provided endless opportunities for Kim, Arevalo, and Hinostroza.
“I wanted to go to this tournament because it is one of the most renowned junior tournaments in the world with hundreds of Junior players from around the world,” Hinostroza said.
“Juan Ber, Andres, and Jason are flying the Hill flag high,” Erasmus said. “Players and coaches see the H Squash on their shirts or Hill on their hoodies and ask questions. They want to know where they’re from. It’s a great conversation starter and an unbelievable opportunity to get Hill on the world squash map.”
