In the Fall of 2024, Kris Donaldson, the current Interim Varsity Boys’ Soccer Coach for the 2023-2024 season will officially step up into the role of Varsity Boys’ Soccer Coach.
Although the switch from interim head coach to head coach may seem natural, Donaldson hesitated on officially making the switch. He was worried about taking the role full-time, as he currently holds many roles at Hill. “At first I thought being the head coach would be a bit too much on my plate, so in the beginning there was some hesitation,” Donaldson remarked.
However, his love for the program made him change his mind and he decided to take on the role full-time. “I just switched my mind. I said, I will take it on. I will be busy because I really like this program.”
Donaldson believes that the Varsity boys’ soccer program is excellent as it is, where they are “not only a very well renowned program, but people want to come here to play soccer.” However, he has bigger plans for the program. As head coach, Donaldson wants to “change the narrative from being just a good program to becoming one of the best programs in the country”.
Despite the program currently doing very well, Donaldson thinks “the hardest part is keeping up with our competitors, finding not only good soccer players, but finding great Hill community members as in our environment as a boarding school, it is a lot of competition to get the best players”.
To prepare for the upcoming season as head coach, Donaldson plans on taking online classes to “further my (his) coaching experience education”. Additionally, during the off-season, Donaldson assists his college team in Philadelphia, a role that helps him hone his coaching skills even more.
An overall goal Donaldson has as head coach is for the Hill soccer program to be “about being a family and also being good at soccer at the same time”.
