After attending The Shipley School for the past three years, Tyne Miller ’20 joined Hill this year and became an essential member of the Hill girls’ tennis team. Miller has been playing tennis for the past nine years. She first fell in love with tennis when she lived at Lawrenceville and her mom was the head coach. Miller’s mother, Penny Miller, began to coach her, and she found joy in every moment on the court while fighting for every point. Miller began playing competitively at the age of 10 and continued to build on her skills thereafter.
Playing tennis in college has been one of Miller’s biggest goals for a long time. Because Tennis is an individual sport, there is not really a team aspect to it when playing it as a club sport. Miller considers her parents, coaches, trainers, and everyone who has helped her through her injuries to be her own team.
At Hill, Miller has found the tennis team to be very welcoming. She noted that, though the team has had a lot of adversity this fall already, it has brought them closer. Miller also believes that this team is well-rounded. As well as being tough on the courts, everyone works hard in school and is passionate about what they do.
Miller has spent a lot of time competing in tournaments alone. One thing that is very different from these competitions is that, in high school tennis, players are allowed coaching during changeovers. Miller says it is nice to have the support of your coaches during the matches and to hear the cheers of her teammates motivates her further. If she had to give one piece of advice to someone who aspires to be a great tennis player, Miller would tell them, “It’s not easy. If you love it, you stick with it and you fight for it. That’s the biggest thing.”
