Hill’s performing arts program is once again giving the community another spectacular show with “Love Dot,” an adapted version of “The Wizard of Oz” that has been remade to reflect the theme of female empowerment. The show has gender swapped all the lead roles except Dorothy. This modification of gender roles includes the Wicked Witch and Glinda cast as males.

“It’s been such a blessing to see the classic story retold,” Director of the CFTA Christopher McGriff said. “It’s exciting to see people’s reactions to seeing some of the songs told in a new way.”

McGriff created the premise, but he attributes the real magic of the production to script writer Sydnee Johnson and music arranger Christopher Robinson. McGriff is thrilled that the actors can play these characters the way in which they truly interpret them: their speech, look, posture — all things that are being created and creatively demonstrated by the actor. It gives a certain freedom to the cast and will surely make for a distinct retelling.

McGriff described the overarching mission of the show: “The Hill Theater department aims to consistently create new educational opportunities for our students. This was an excellent chance for our students to learn brand new skills.”

Given the professionalism and dedication that cast and crew members give to the productions at Hill, McGriff is excited to see the production come to life.

“Even though it’s been a long and exhausting process, the results have been absolutely amazing,” Nimala Sivakumar ’23, a stage manager for the upcoming show, said. “I adore this show with all my heart and everyone in it, and I look forward to seeing how far it’ll go.”

This revolutionary show is sure to gather attention throughout the community in the days leading up to opening night. Dates are set for March 4 through March 6, tickets are out, and excitement is bubbling for the next production from the creative members of the Hill Theater Guild.
