Women’s sports must take equal pay seriously

The world has always been at odds when it comes to gender. Although many people like to say that women and men are equal, it is clear which gender is favored. Men are perceived as powerful while women are known for taking care of the kids. Because it is hard to get people to change their view, living in this biased world forever is inevitable. Yes, many believe that men are better than women business wise, however should this really be the case for sports too?

As expected, women’s soccer teams receive much less prize money compared to the men’s soccer teams. However, women should not be the ones to earn less considering that the women’s U.S. national team has been far more successful than the men’s. Despite this fact, women are still earning less than the US men’s team, a team that hasn’t even been doing as well as women’s.

According to The Washington Post, in the 2015 World Cup, the women’s team shared a bonus of “$1.73 million; the men lost in the Round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup and split $5.38 million in performance bonuses.” Although the men’s team lost, why are they rewarded with such a high bonus? Even more, why is the reward a higher amount than the US women’s team, a team that actually won and placed higher?

I strongly believe the women’s team should receive equal prize money as the men’s teams, and question what Team USA will do in the future to acknowledge this discrimination and take action for a change.
