Lawrenceville Weekend this year brought all the expected fervor. Perhaps the weekend’s most significant achievement was logistical: successfully managing the influx of the entire Lawrenceville student body onto the school campus, this is a rare, if not unprecedented, occurrence that required meticulous planning and coordination.
“It was a total team effort between a number of departments at the school,” Bill Stiles, for whom this was his first L’Ville Weekend as athletics director, said. “From the head of school’s office on down, it was truly all hands on deck to ensure that the day was fun, but safe, and met the standards and expectations of Hill. Mr. Weibley and the deans’ office, Mr. Kuklentz and the security team, and Mr. Peterman and the facilities team, in particular, were great partners with Athletics to help make sure the weekend ran as smoothly as it did.”
“Of course, all the planning in the world wouldn’t mean anything if our amazing students didn’t meet the challenge of our expectations and what we asked of them—and they did, and then some!” he added.
The final results of the weekend saw both schools trade blows across various courts and fields, but Lawrenceville ultimately took home the Meigs–Green Cup by an overall score of 10.5–5.5.
“With the exception of a few lopsided scores on each side, most of the games were very competitive,” Stiles noted.
The true narrative of the weekend hinged less on the final scoreboard tally and more on the indelible moments of Hill community spirit that emerged.
“I have never seen so many students at cross-country and even watched Mrs. Devaney direct traffic on Jackson Street to make sure that our students crossed safely,” Stiles said.
At the end of a tough football game, Stiles recalled a group of students spontaneously lining up to form a tunnel for the football players as they exited the field in appreciation for their “toughness, perseverance, and heart.”
“I am getting chills thinking about it now,” said Stiles. “I will never forget that—another example of what makes Hill, Hill.”
