This year, yet another one of Hill’s most beloved traditions, “Hilloween,” underwent multiple changes.

Through an email from Dean of Student Life David Hoffman, the Student Life Office announced Tuesday that students would be allowed a dress-down day for costumes while they attended Saturday classes on the 31. Hoffman’s office also provided students opportunities to order costumes from off-campus in anticipation of the remaining costume contest. 

However, Halloween seated dinner, a usual staple of Hilloween, and the events that follow were not possible.

Not only a pillar of student life, Hilloween was an event participated in by the entire community, namely faculty families. While parading through the Dining Hall in full costume as per tradition was not possible, families were still able to dress up for a private parade. 

“This year, because of COVID they are modifying how Hilloween is being run. Although it is being modified, they are still trying to make it a fun night for everyone. I think that is what is so special. Through it being changed, there will still be something special for everyone.” said Staci Mortenson, mother of Anders ’24 and Annelise.

Donuts, a costume contest, and the dress down day were among the multiple things implemented in an attempt to preserve the holiday for the entire community. 

“I’m really excited to still be able to dress up this year for Hilloween. I do miss the full spirit week, but I’m happy we are able to even have Hilloween,” said Meena Ali ’23.
