On Tuesday, March 2, the Student Government Association’s Annual Presidential Debate took place in the CFTA. The six remaining candidates after the initial caucus walked on the stage to answer questions in hopes of gaining the entire student body’s support. On Wednesday and Thursday, the community finally voted on their two Sixth Form leaders.

The 2019-20 SGA President will be Michael Rockovich ’20, with Liam Keenan ’20 serving as the Vice President.

As a current Fifth Form representative, Rockovich cites his background knowledge of the inner workings of the SGA as both his motivation and his strengths going forward into his presidency. His campaign is focused on continuing current president Garrett George’s ‘19 advocacy for mental health awareness. As he puts it, “there have been programs that have been started to really bring this awareness to Hill, but we need to continue to make the most of them.”

He plans to continue collaborating with Head of Residential Life, John Giannikis, saying “I think [mental health] is something all boarding schools should focus on with having students living on campus. I think that by getting the ball rolling, we’re opening up to so much change and new ideas that can really help make the school a better place and it’s something that I’m looking forward to continuing to work on.”

Like most candidates, both Rockovich and Keenan expressed a strong desire to increase transparency and communication from the SGA and admission to the student body. Keenan’s campaign was specifically centered around voting transparency, including posting representatives’ votes on the SGA website.

“At the moment, you don’t know how your representative votes on a bill or legislation, but with this proposal, you can have an honest conversation about how they voted and if they are representing you,” Keenan said. “I think this is a crucial step towards transparency next year.”

During both the caucus and debate, both winners expressed their strong passion and desire to improve and serve the Hill Community in the upcoming year as the newly-named student leaders of the school.
